Also known as pot marigold, calendula is native to southern Europe, the Mediterranean, Macaronesia, and Asia. This perennial herbaceous plant belongs to the family of Asteraceae and generally grows up to a height of around 1 to 2 feet. Known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, antidiabetic, anti-thrombogenic, neuroprotective, and anticancer properties, calendula has long been used in Unani and Ayurvedic practices. It is also used as a spice and in the manufacture of various cosmetic products including body creams, shampoos, and soaps.
